The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Robert D. Castona (ASN: RA-19402976), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 26 March 1952, a patrol from Company G was given the mission of raiding enemy-held Hill 168 near Chongjachon, Korea, and capturing hostile prisoners for intelligence purposes. After advancing almost to the top of the hill with no resistance, the patrol was suddenly subjected to an intense barrage of enemy automatic-weapons, grenade and small-arms fire, effectively pinning it down and preventing its further advance. Realizing the importance of silencing this fire, Corporal Castona fearlessly left his position of cover and moved through the lethal hail of bullets to within grenade range of one of the enemy strongholds. From an upright position he hurled grenades and fired his weapon into the hostile position. His devastating accuracy completely neutralized the position and allowed the patrol to move forward. Although he was painfully wounded during this vicious exchange of fire, he provided effective covering fire for the patrol, enabling it to make an orderly withdrawal. Corporal Castona’s aggressive daring and gallantry reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
