The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Augustine Castillo (ASN: RA-38679519), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 5 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. During an enemy assault the company commander fell wounded and was lying in an extremely exposed position. Private Castillo dashed fearlessly forward to his wounded leader and, disregarding the heavy enemy small arms fire to which he was subjected, administered first aid. He then carried the wounded officer to a defilade position and immediately thereafter was struck and killed by hostile sniper fire. The gallantry displayed by Private Castillo in sacrificing his life to save that of a fallen comrade reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
