Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 534 (November 24, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Richard P. Cassity (ASN: 0-2263348), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 October 1951, Lieutenant Cassity’s command, the Republic of Korea Raiders Platoon, was attached to the assault elements of Company G during that unit’s attack on Hill 400, near Chorwon, Korea. Leading his men up the hill through a withering fire, Lieutenant Cassity was wounded by grenade fragments and the platoon became disorganized. Disregarding his wounds, he moved among the men encouraging and reorganizing them; displaying exemplary courage, he resumed the advance hurling grenades and discharging his weapon with great effectiveness. Upon reaching the crest of the objective, Lieutenant Cassity was again struck by the hostile fire and rendered incapable of walking; however, he refused medical treatment and continued to direct the attack until the objective had been secured. Lieutenant Cassity’s gallant leadership reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
