The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Willard (William) H. Cassady (ASN: RA-12351816), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 29 November 1950, near Sachang-ni, Korea, the enemy had overrun one company command post in the battalion defense perimeter and were advancing on Corporal Cassady’s 60-MM. mortar position. Observing this, Corporal Cassady, on his own initiative, unhesitatingly, and with complete disregard for his own safety, left his foxhole and took up an exposed position on a river bank, from which he could best fire on the advancing enemy with his 57-MM. recoilless rifle. Although under continuous enemy small arms fire, Corporal Cassady, without assistance, loaded and fired his weapon until all his ammunition was expended. He then returned to his foxhole and fired his automatic rifle until his squad, which had been pinned down by fire, was able to assist him in driving back the enemy. During this action, Corporal Cassady personally killed seven of the enemy. His rapid thinking and fearless actions were major factors in preventing a breakthrough in the company line. Corporal Cassady’s initiative and heroism on this occasion inspired his company and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
