The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Pinkie Carter (ASN: RA-38207132), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 28 November 1950, in the vicinity of Kunu-ri, Korea. On that date, Sergeant Carter’s company was overrun by numerically superior enemy forces, and it became impossible to direct fire without injury to friendly troops. When orders were given to withdraw to more favorable firing positions, Sergeant Carter, disregarding his own chances for safety, voluntarily elected to remain behind and gather the many stragglers who could not find their way to safety. After assembling a group of friendly troops, he proceeded to lead them to the rear. On the way to friendly positions, the group encountered enemy bands that attempted to capture them. As a result of the superior control exercised by Sergeant Carter over his men, they fought their way out without suffering any casualties, The gallantry demonstrated by Sergeant Carter reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
