The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private George S. Garner (ASN: 36383275), United States Army, for heroism while serving with the 35th Infantry Division in the vicinity of ****, Germany, on 14 April 1945. When a fire of unknown origin swept through the vehicle in which he was riding, Private Garner, assisted by two other occupants, tore the blazing tarpaulin from the truck. Although his hands were painfully burned, he threw flaming cans of gasoline from the vehicle and removed others which were about to explode. Then, with a fire extinguisher and sand, Private Garner and his companions smothered the fire. By his courageous initiative and disregard for personal safety, Sergeant Garner saved the vehicle from destruction.
