The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Charles E. Carroll (ASN: RA-18359035), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 9 February 1951, near Sinhyon-ni, Korea, Private Carrol’s rifle platoon was pinned down as it was attacking a ridge line defended by a well dug-in and well concealed enemy force. Unable to maneuver or withdraw because of its exposed position, the platoon was blanketed by the enemy’s automatic fire. Voluntarily leaping from his position, Private Carroll, with complete disregard for the tremendous enemy fire, dashed for the enemy strong point, firing his carbine on full automatic. As he neared the enemy position, he threw hand grenades, and destroyed its occupants. His action enabled his platoon to continue its advance. Private Carrol’s heroism and gallantry reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the high traditions of the military service.
