The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Benjamin L. Carroll, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of Battery C, 49th Field Artillery Battalion, 7th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Hoengsong, Korea, on 12 February 1951. On this date, a strong enemy force attacked a convoy of the 49th field artillery battalion, and with intense automatic small arms and mortar fire and grenades, forced the convoy personnel to leave their vehicles and seek cover in the ditches along the road. Hearing the fire fight, Captain Carroll, with complete disregard for his own safety, proceeded to the scene from his position near the head of the column, which had passed the immediate area of attack. Captain Carroll, quickly analyzing the situation and realizing his troops were inadequate to continue engagement of the overwhelming force and that loss of personnel and critical artillery equipment was imminent, moved up and down the column exposing himself to intense enemy fire, shouting phrases of encouragement and urging personnel to leave their positions of safety and return to their vehicles. His courageous actions instilled confidence and courage in the men, who responded to his directions. Through his fearless leadership, calm demeanor and courageous example, the column was reorganized and moved out of the danger area. Captain Carroll’s gallantry and courageous action on this occasion enabled his battery to complete its mission and reflect great credit on himself and the military service.
