The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Corps of Engineers) Robert William Carney (ASN: 0-2029631), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 10th Engineer Combat Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 February 1951, Lieutenant Carney and four enlisted men were detailed to booby trap a bridge over the Han River in the vicinity of Tukto, Korea. Upon arriving at the bridge site, heavy mortar fire was encountered but, by moving his tanks to a new position on the other side of the bridge, Lieutenant Carney was able to dismount and reconnoiter the bridge site. On dismounting from the tank, Lieutenant Carney was subjected to heavy sniper and machine gun fire, but completely disregarding his personal safety, he made a reconnaissance, assembled the detail, and started booby trapping the bridge. While the work progressed, Lieutenant Carney proceeded considerably in advance of his men and, as he neared the enemy-held side of the bridge, he was mortally wounded by sniper fire. Lieutenant Carney’s outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and exemplify the high traditions of the military service.
