Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 360 (August 15, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant William John Carnahan (ASN: RA-13236840), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. In the vicinity of Harang-dong, Korea, on 7 June 1951, while in the attack of Hill 687, the Third Platoon of Company B made contact with the enemy and became pinned down by extremely heavy small arms and automatic weapons fire. Although the surrounding terrain was rocky and treacherous, Sergeant Carnahan, in order to better direct the fire of the machine gun squad, continually moved about revealing himself to the hostile fire to locate points of more advantageous visibility. His accurate pinpointing of enemy emplacements continued until he was mortally wounded. Sergeant Carnahan’s gallant devotion to duty contributed immeasurably to the success of the company’s operation and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
