The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Leland L. Cargle (ASN: RA-37645480), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 27 May 1951, in the vicinity of Chaun-ni, Korea. Sergeant Cargle led the assault elements of his platoon to the crest of a hill where they were met by a withering hail of hostile automatic weapons and grenade fire. Seeing members of his unit fall, he charged the enemy position, thereby drawing fire upon himself. His heroic action caused a momentary confusion among the enemy, allowing his platoon to withdraw from its exposed position. He remained behind until all of his comrades were able to withdraw to new defenses. While he was rejoining the platoon, he was wounded by enemy fire. Sergeant Cargle’s gallantry reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
