The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Kenneth E. Cargill (ASN: US-54009314), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 29 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On that date, during an attack on well-fortified enemy positions, the platoon was pinned down by intense enemy fire. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Private Cargill, with utter disregard for his personal safety, continually exposed himself to enemy fire while moving forward and throwing hand grenades into the enemy bunkers. Upon destroying several enemy bunkers, Private Cargill engaged in a vicious assault on other enemy positions with grenades and fixed bayonet, routing the opposition and inflicting numerous casualties upon them. His courageous actions inspired the remainder of his unit to advance and successfully complete its mission. The gallantry in action demonstrated by demonstrated by Private Cargill on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
