The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Armondo D. Carboni (ASN: RA-31273996), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Battery, 39th Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 29 November 1950, near Tongyang, Korea, a liaison aircraft being employed to deliver critical supplies to an isolated garrison, and evacuate wounded troops, was damaged in landing at the Tongyang airstrip. Sergeant Carboni undertook the repair job, and with utter disregard for his own safety, remained in an exposed position continuing to repair the aircraft until the task was completed, despite the fact that the airstrip was subject to enemy fire. As a result of Sergeant Carboni’s heroic and skillful actions, a vitally-needed aircraft was saved from almost certain destruction and continued to be used on its mission of supply and evacuation at this critical time. The courage displayed by Sergeant Carboni on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
