The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal [then Private First Class] Frederick Capallia (ASN: RA-14329133), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. Corporal Capallia was a member of a 75-mm. recoilless rifle security force west of the Naktong River on 2 September 1950. When an exploding shell stunned his sergeant, he voluntarily assumed the responsibility for the defense. Despite a heavy concentration of mortar fire, he skillfully organized his men into a cohesive fighting unit, directing their fire with such accuracy that the overwhelmingly greater number of enemy were forced to retreat. Corporal Capallia’s initiative, resolute leadership and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
