The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Albert Cantanese (ASN: RA-33256410), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3rd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Kyang Ju, Korea, on 9 September 1950. Sergeant Cantanese’s company was subjected to a furious night attack by a numerically superior enemy force. By constantly moving among his men, shouting words of encouragement, and directing their fire, he was able to maintain his position in the face of overwhelming odds. His continuous disregard for his own safety served well to inspire his men in their gallant stand. During the fierce fire fight an enemy grenade fell near one of his men. Completely unmindful of personal safety, Sergeant Cantanese sprang between his comrade and the grenade and kicked it away. At that moment the grenade exploded wounding Sergeant Cantanese, but sparing the soldier where he had protection. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Cantanese, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
