The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Armando R. Canalez (ASN: 6570110), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Headquarters Battery, 60th Coast Artillery Regiment (Anti Aircraft), in action at Corregidor, Philippine Islands, on 26 April 1942. During an intense Japanese artillery shelling of the beleaguered American garrison on Corregidor, essential height-finder equipment was put out of operation by heavy enemy fire. Completely disregarding his own safety, Corporal Canalez voluntarily left his place of safety and, while still under fire, courageously repaired this equipment. By his inspiring bravery and exemplary devotion to duty, Corporal Canalez made a memorable contribution to our forces during a most critical period. His gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
