The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Lorenzo L. Canady (ASN: US-52139042), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 24 November 1951 Company E was occupying defensive positions on Hill 355 near Kang So-Ri, Korea. The outpost, established approximately 100 yards to the front of the main line of resistance and manned by about 25 men, received the brunt of a ferocious attack by an estimated hostile force of two battalions. The intense fire pushed some of the men from their positions, causing a serious threat to both flanks of the outpost and thereby the company’s control of the key hill position. Private Canady, operating a machine gun on the left flank, remained in his position delivering a lethal hail of fire into the on-coming enemy, despite the near collapse of his sector of the line. At one point in the action it became difficult for him to see from his position, so unhesitatingly he took the machine gun in his hands and courageously stood erect in full view of the heavy enemy fire and continued his own devastating firing. All the other automatic weapons had been put out of operation and it was Private Canady’s daring action that held the enemy long enough for the outpost to reorganize and repair the defensive perimeter. Private Canady’s gallantry and superb fortitude reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
