The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private George Camelo (ASN: 34155536), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 8 July 1943. As a member of an outpost party, Private Camelo, a telephone operator, reported the approach of an enemy force. In the subsequent attack he remained at his post to report on the situation, and on two occasions courageously left his foxhole under heavy fire to make certain that a friendly force in the area was not being engaged erroneously. The Japanese continued to press their attack and one of the enemy managed to get close enough to toss a grenade into private Camelo’s foxhole causing him to suffer severe wounds. Despite this he continued to operate the telephone and notified his company that the outpost detail would have to withdraw. Following this he started crawling back to his own lines with the telephone still in his hands. He was later picked up and assisted to the command post where he died as a result of his wounds. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
