The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Allen L. Calvey (ASN: RA-26352640), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 27 September 1950 near Koryang, Korea. On the afternoon of this date he was an automatic rifleman in a rifle company that was attacking high ground defended by the enemy. When his unit reached its objective his platoon was pinned down by enemy machine gun and small arms fire and was unable to advance. He quickly located an enemy machine gun position and, with total disregard for his own safety, assumed an exposed position in order to bring effective fire upon the enemy. When his automatic rifle failed to fire he immediately dashed across fifty yards of open terrain, through heavy enemy fire, and picked up another weapon. With this again he advanced by fire and movement toward the enemy, until he succeeded in destroying the machine gun and killing the crew. His constant exposure to the intense enemy fire was a source of tremendous inspiration to all of his comrades and was a major factor in their ultimate success in routing the enemy. The gallantry displayed by Private Calvey on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
