The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private George E. Calvert (ASN: US-56147414), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 12 September 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On that date, Private Calvert’s platoon had the mission of attacking an enemy-held hill and destroying several machine gun emplacements. During the ensuing action the unit was halted by devastating hail of automatic weapons and small arms fire from hostile bunkers. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Private Calvert, with complete disregard for his own safety, assaulted the machine gun nest directly in the path of his unit. He succeeded in destroying the emplacement while inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy. At this time another hostile machine gun commenced firing upon Private Calvert fatally wounding him. Through his self-sacrificing action, friendly units were able to advance and accomplish their mission successfully. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Calvert on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
