The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Lee Roy Calhoun (ASN: RA-14364857), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 23 April 1951, near Ana-Hyon, Korea, Private Calhoun’s platoon had engaged the enemy in a fierce battle and finally succeeded in occupying the enemy-held hill when enemy forces launched a counterattack. As the enemy assaulted the hill position, they began throwing a shower of hand grenades, one of which exploded near Private Calhoun’s emplacement, blowing off his combat pack and badly injuring his back with shrapnel. Despite the great personal danger to himself and the fact that he was seriously wounded, he tenaciously refused to leave his position and aided materially in beating back the enemy attacks. Only when he was ordered to withdraw, did he attempt to secure medical attention. His courageous and selfless action, instrumental in the carrying out of the successful withdrawal of the unit, reflect the highest credit upon Private Calhoun and are in keeping with the most honored traditions of the military service.
