The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Corporal Benjamin F. Calfee (ASN: US-53032928), United States Army, for heroic achievement as a member of Company F, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 12 September 1951, in the vicinity of Pia-Ri, Korea. On that date, several assaults against the exceptionally strong enemy defense by Company F were repulsed by heave enemy mortar, machine gun, and sniper fire. To better the attack an additional platoon was attached to the spearheading unit. During the advance under intense enemy fire, Corporal Calfee was painfully wounded by mortar fragments. In spite of the wound, he drawled about the impact area caring for comrades more seriously wounded, refusing to be detained for treatment. He made several trips under enemy fire to carry morphine to his wounded comrades so they could have some relief until further medical treatment was available. The outstanding devotion to duty and courage demonstrated by Corporal Calfee reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
