Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 46 (January 22, 1951)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] Lowell V. Caldwell (ASN: 0-2212024), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Heavy Mortar Company, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 1 September 1950, Lieutenant Caldwell’s mortar platoon was supporting an infantry battalion in the vicinity of Haman, Korea. As a fire fight developed in the area occupied by an adjacent rifle company, he deployed his platoon as riflemen to prepare for an anticipated attack. When the enemy attacked in force shortly thereafter, he moved about the area encouraging his men and directing their fire. His bold actions so inspired the members of his platoon that they repulsed the hostile attack and captured and destroyed large quantities of enemy weapons and materiel. Lieutenant Caldwell’s aggressive leadership, calm courage and notable military skill reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
