The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Chester R. Cahill (ASN: US-56072956), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 12 January 1952 in the vicinity of Ponggil-li, Korea. On that date the second platoon of Company L was assaulting enemy positions when it was halted by intense hostile small arms and automatic weapons fire. Corporal Cahill saw two of his comrades were wounded and lying across exposed terrain. Unhesitatingly he dashed through the deadly blaze of enemy fire to give them aid and evacuate them to a safe position. During this courageous and selfless action, he was hit and fatally wounded by enemy fire. His heroic deed greatly inspired all those who witnessed his actions and was outstanding on a field of battle where valor is expected. The gallantry in action displayed by Corporal Cahill reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
