The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Wesley H. Byrne (ASN: 38270370), United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with the Medical Section, 1803d Service Command Unit Detachment, General Hospital, Longview, Texas, on 1 October 1944, near Calumet, Oklahoma. Although burning gasoline was scattered over a wide area, Private Byrne ignored the possibility of further explosion and entered the flaming wreckage of an aircraft and extricated from the tangled mass Sergeant John L. Carpenter, sole survivor of the crash, thereby saving his life.
