The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant [then Sergeant] Guy J. Byland (ASN: RA-14027383), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 18 February 1951, near Chamsil-li, Korea, a patrol from Company B, 1st Battalion, dispatched across the Han River to contact the enemy, sustained several casualties when suddenly engaged by the enemy. Sergeant Byland, learning of the patrol’s request for an aidman, immediately proceeded to its assistance. Wading the icy, waist-deep river under heavy enemy fire, he reached the unit and discovered the wounded to be in desperate need of plasma. Unhesitatingly braving the hostile automatic weapons and mortar fire, he returned across the river, secured the plasma, and again re-crossed the river under intense fire. Sergeant Byland’s gallant, courageous, and selfless actions resulted in saving a wounded man’s life and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
