The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Eugene C. Butler (ASN: ER-57511399), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 4 October 1951, Company G attacked well-fortified hostile positions on Hill 395, near Yaksan-dong, Korea. The friendly forces had been occupying defensive positions on the hill for some time but enemy troops had moved back into their previously built bunkers on several fingers of the hill. In order to allow friendly troops more freedom of observation and patrol, the first platoon was given the vital mission of clearing the foe from this hill. As Sergeant Butler led his squad over the rough terrain toward one of the hostile positions, it was effectively pinned down by heavy enemy fire. Completely disregarding his own safety, he continued to advance alone through the lethal hail of hostile small-arms and grenade fire. Upon reaching the enemy emplacements, he threw grenades at the hostile positions with devastating accuracy, completely disorganizing the enemy troops and forcing them to withdraw. Sergeant Butler’s heroic and determined actions were instrumental in neutralizing the hostile positions and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
