The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Matthew W. Busey, III (ASN: 0-60845), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 6th Medium Tank Battalion, , 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Changin-ni, Korea, on 4 April 1951. His company was on an armored patrol when a tank in one platoon was disabled by enemy fire. He was ordered to move his platoon over and give protection while the tank crew made repairs. As he approached the area, intense enemy fire opened on the disabled tank and succeeded in pinning down and wounding two members of its crew. After refusing to let any members of his own platoon go to their rescue, First Lieutenant Busey, with complete disregard for his own safety, mounted his tank and in spite of the fury of the enemy fire, proceeded to go forward and carried one of the wounded men to safety while the other walked beside him for support. First Lieutenant Busey’s courage and complete devotion to his fallen comrades reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
