The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Johnny Lee Burriss (ASN: 14881836), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Sergeant Burriss distinguished himself by gallantry in action on 18 November 1969 while serving as Village and hamlet Security Advisor, Ham Tan District, Binh Tuy Province, Republic of Vietnam. On that date, Sergeant Burriss was driving the lead jeep in a small convoy on National Highway 1. Upon rounding a curve, he saw a platoon-sized enemy unit attempting to cross the road. Realizing his position in the convoy, Sergeant Burriss immediately increased his speed and fired his weapon at the enemy inflicting numerous casualties and causing considerable confusion in the enemy unit. Approximately half-way through the enemy unit, Sergeant Burriss was fatally wounded by the enemy. As a result of Sergeant Burriss’ exceptional courage and outstanding professionalism, five enemy soldiers were killed and numerous friendly casualties prevented.
