The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Brigadier General John Crouse Burney, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States. General Burney distinguished himself in a series of positions of great responsibility from April 1971 to August 1974, culminating as the Deputy Director of Estimates with the Defense Intelligence Agency from January 1974 to August 1974. In this position, which is among the most demanding in the entire United States intelligence community, General Burney conducted himself with diplomacy, tact, and acumen that created a high regard for the Directorate throughout the intelligence community. He was second in command of the United States Delegation to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Conference in March 1974 and led the United States Delegation to the Tripartite Intelligence Conference in May 1974. His broad experience and commanding knowledge in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters created the highest respect for his strategic insight during both meetings. By his exemplary performance of duty, Brigadier General Burney has reflected great credit upon himself, the Defense Intelligence Agency and the United States Army.
