The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) William O. Burla (ASN: 0-1317367), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 30 November 1950 in the vicinity of Kunu-ri, Korea. On that date, Captain Burla, a member of the G-2 Section was riding in a vehicle in a convoy attempting to break through an enemy roadblock approximately five miles in depth. The roadblock was firmly established and covered by heavy hostile fire from well-entrenched enemy in surrounding high ground. Several elements preceding this group left many dead and wounded along the route. As the convoy entered the roadblock area it was forced to halt. Captain Burla began administering to the wounded lying helplessly on the road and in the ditches. He improvised stretchers, and found blankets in which to wrap our wounded. Under heavy mortar fire the convoy moved out. Captain Burla walked alongside the moving vehicles continuing to render aid to our wounded. His complete disregard for the intense enemy fire was an inspiration to all who observed him. Only after seeing that all the wounded were taken to an aid station and given medical attention did he return to his own unit. The gallantry and devotion to fallen comrades displayed by Captain Burla on this occasion reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
