The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Robert S. Buckowing (ASN: 36155225), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 126th Infantry Regiment, 32d Infantry Division, in New Guinea on 8 December 1942. Volunteering as a member of a patrol, Private First Class Buckowing advanced into enemy territory, located and attempted to destroy a fortified enemy machine gun position. He threw a hand grenade into the enemy position and then, with full knowledge that enemy snipers were in the area, stood upright and fired a slip from his sub-machine gun into the enemy machine-gun nest and was shot and killed during this action.
