The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel (Infantry) David Hayter (Hater) Buchanan (ASN: 0-17746), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, from 24 to 29 July 1943. Colonel Buchanan courageously occupied a command post one hundred yards removed from enemy lines and continuously exposed himself to heavy fire in order to direct his battalion in a highly successful attack on strongly entrenched Japanese positions. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Colonel Buchanan, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
