Department of the Army, General Orders No. 51 (July 20, 1948)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Technical Sergeant Thomas B. Brydson, United States Army, for outstanding heroism as a member of the crew of the Distribution Box Boat L-73, at the entrance to San Francisco Bay, on 29 January 1948. When an accident occurred aboard the United States Army Mine Planter “Horace F. Spurgin,” which caused a deck hand to be struck unconscious and thrown overboard, Sergeant Brydson immediately plunged into the hazardous, treacherous waters with utter disregard for his safety, rescued the unconscious man, and, without consideration of his personal welfare after being exposed to cold water, administered first aid.
