The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class George W. Brown (ASN: 20506478), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 11 July 1943. Private Brown volunteered to lead a patrol in an attempt at eliminating an enemy machine gun emplacement. Leading his men he crawled to a position within fifty yards of the gun where his patrol was subjected to intense fire and pinned to the ground. Disregarding his personal safety, Private Brown aggressively crawled forward alone in an endeavor to destroy the gun with a hand grenade. To do this he was forced to expose himself, and in hurling the grenade from a spot thirty yards removed from the hostile emplacement he was struck by a burst of hostile machinegun fire and killed instantly. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
