The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant First Class Charles Jackson Britt (ASN: 13765136), United States Army, for gallantry in action during the period 5 to 13 June 1971, while serving as an Infantry Battalion Advisor for the 22d Infantry Division, Army of the Republic of Vietnam. On 5 June 1971, Sergeant Britt volunteered to be inserted by re-supply helicopter into Fire Support Base “5”, which had practically been cut off from all friendly support due to the North Vietnamese Army attack, so that he could provide advisory assistance to better control and coordinate the United States air and artillery support. After orbiting over the fire base for approximately 45 minutes, while air strikes and artillery pounded known and suspected enemy locations, the helicopter low-leveled up to the fire base and kicked off the re-supply items. Although they were receiving heavy fire, Sergeant Britt was able to safely disembark and establish liaison with the Army of the Republic of Vietnam Battalion Commander on the fire base. For the next week, Sergeant Britt worked tirelessly in accomplishing his mission. He directed and adjusted United States gunships, airstrikes and artillery on targets of opportunity. Undaunted by the enemy fire, Sergeant Britt consistently exposed himself during this entire period to identify enemy muzzle flashes so that he could direct United States gunships and artillery which subsequently led to the enemy’s defeat. Many lives were believed to have been saved because of Sergeant Britt’s heroic actions. Sergeant First Class Britt’s conspicuous gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
