The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Wesley G. Brady (ASN: 39153757), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Battery C, 347th Anti-Aircraft Artillery (Automatic Weapons) Battalion (M), 95th Infantry Division, in action in the vicinity of Gravelette, France, from 14 to 16 November 1944. On 14 November 1944, one platoon of 40-mm. guns of Battery C, 547th Anti-Aircraft Artillery (Automatic Weapons) Battalion (M) was emplaced 200 yards south of Gravelette, France, to fire on Fort Jeanne d-Arc of the Metz group. As the guns were defiladed it was necessary to establish an observation post. Private Harold A. Stitzer and Wesley G. Brady volunteered to establish and maintain the post in a house in Gravelette. They occupied the post at 1000 hours, 14 November 1944 and directed fire from it until 1530 hours on 16 November 1944, when they were ordered to withdraw. During this time the observation post was subjected to extremely heavy enemy machine gun, mortar, and artillery fire an on one occasion an enemy artillery shell exploded in the room below that from which they were observing. Despite the enemy fire, Privates Stitzer and Brady remained at their post and directed fire with such accurate effect that two enemy observation towers that were holding up our infantry advance were destroyed. The courage, coolness and devotion to duty demonstrated on this occasion by Privates Stitzer and Brady are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon themselves, their unit, and the United States Army.
