The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Military Intelligence) Robert White Boyd (ASN: 0-5236933), United States Army (Reserve), for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Advisory Team 70, Technical Intelligence Detachment, 525th Military Intelligence Group, in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Boyd distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 13 October 1967 while serving as advisor to a Vietnamese company on a combat mission in Binh Doung province. Intelligence reports indicated that the Viet Cong were setting up a base camp in the area, and Lieutenant Boyd led his men to search for the location. He broke his company into squad-size units to facilitate contacting of the enemy and personally led one sweep of the area. While moving through dense jungle, his element detected a small Viet Cong unit and immediately pursued the insurgents. The enemy soldiers took refuge in a trench and brought heavy fire on his men, pinning them down. Ignoring his own safety, Lieutenant Boyd moved through the savage fire to inspire his men and deploy them for an assault on the entrenched Viet Cong. Heedless of the accurate hostile fire, he stood up and led a fierce charge on the determined enemy soldiers. He fired intense bursts from his rifle as he ran toward the Viet Cong and rallied his men to attack furiously by his aggressive actions. He was mortally wounded while fearlessly leading his men in the face of grave danger. His courageous efforts inspired his men to overwhelm the enemy and inflict heavy casualties on them. First Lieutenant Boyd’s gallantry in action, at the cost of his life, was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
