The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Colonel (Infantry) James Orr Boswell (ASN: 09-19188), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 April 1951, in the vicinity of Songna-ni, Korea, while covering the withdrawal of friendly units near Hill 228, the First Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, was in a blocking position when it received intense enemy fire. Realizing that this position was the critical point in the withdrawal, Colonel Boswell moved forward of the position under heavy enemy fire to evaluate the situation. Deciding that a tank company was necessary for support, he hastened two miles to the rear refueling position and brought the company forward. With no regard for his safety and fully aware that the enemy was attacking on two flanks, Colonel Boswell returned to an exposed position and, while under complete enemy observation and fire, effected the organization of the task force. Colonel Boswell’s gallantry, courage, and professional skill immeasurably contributed to the success of the operation and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
