The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Vincent H. Bohnenkamp (ASN: 37659451), United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with Company D, 164th Infantry Regiment, 23d Infantry Division (Americal), at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 9 September 1944. When a communications wireman was swept out to sea by the strong current at the mouth of the Reini River, Private First Class Bohnenkamp and a companion unhesitatingly went to his aid. After several unsuccessful attempts to cross the river at its mouth, they ran upstream, swam across the river, returned to the sea shore and swam another 300 yards to the assistance of the man in distress. Private First Class Bohnenkamp and his companion brought the man ashore and revived him. Private First Class Bohnenkamp’s heroism in risking his own life to save the life of a comrade emulates the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
