The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Field Artillery) Linton Sinclair Boatwright (ASN: 0-23968), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of the 37th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 17 May 1951, in the vicinity of Chaun-ni, Korea. On that day Colonel Boatwright was with his battalion about a mile south of Chaun-ni, preparing to withdraw to the south in the face of rapidly advancing enemy ground troops. Realizing that two artillery battalions of the artillery under his control were still further north in the vicinity of Chaun-ni, and in imminent danger of being cut off, Colonel Boatwright, .with complete disregard for his personal safety, proceeded to find a route of withdrawal for the two battalions. Although constantly exposed to enemy small arms and mortar fire, Colonel Boatwright was successful in locating a ford where the two artillery battalions could get their personnel and heavy equipment across. He then supervised and directed the evacuation of the battalions to previously selected new defensive positions. Colonel Boatwright’s devotion to duty, his inspiring leadership, and heroism under fire were instrumental in the preservation of these two artillery battalions. The gallantry in action displayed by Colonel Boatwright reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
