The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Holly Bine (ASN: 35210041), United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with *** Group of Regulating Stations, Transportation Corps, at Ain el Turck, Algeria, on 2 June 1943. While swimming in the sea near Ain el Turck, a fellow soldier was caught in a strong undercurrent and carried more than 175 feet from shore. Upon hearing his cries Staff Sergeant Holly Bine and Technical Sergeant Paul Berry, although themselves fatigues and knowing that the undercurrent existed, immediately and at great risk to their own lives swam to the rescue of the drowning man. With considerable difficulty, they pulled him to the shore and revived him by artificial respirations. The courage and selflessness displayed by these non-commissioned officers reflect the highest traditions of the service.
