War Department, General Orders No. 23 (May 15, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal (Posthumously) to Major (Air Corps) Lewin Bennett Barringer, United States Army Air Forces, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility as Chief of the Glider Section of the Army Air Forces, during World War II. Through his tireless effort and devotion to duty the glider program was organized and developed. He made possible the practical application of a device which enabled an airplane in flight to pick up a towed glider on the ground. His example, ability, leadership, resourcefulness, and persistence, inspired by his keen interest and enthusiasm, were all in the highest traditions of the Army Air Forces of the United States, and played a highly significant part in the development of the transport glider. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Major Barringer and his dedicated contributions reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army.
