The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Charles T. Barnett (ASN: RA-6669706), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 25 April 1951, Company I, 3d Battalion, occupying positions on Hill 287, was subjected to a fierce night attack by a numerically superior hostile force near Tongmang-ni, Korea, and the perimeter was infiltrated at various points. Sergeant Barnett, occupying high ground in an area of penetration, spotted the enemy at a distance of 10 yards and, giving the warning, began firing. When his personal weapon jammed, he fearlessly remained in exposed positions to direct and control his platoon’s fire. As the company withdrew before fanatical hostile assaults, Sergeant Barnett remained behind, covering the displacement by hurling hand grenades. Upon reaching the lower hill slope, the company regrouped; Sergeant Barnett, having assisted in reorganizing for a counterattack, then led the right flank in a determined assault which terminated with the securing of the objective. Sergeant Barnett’s inspiring gallantry and singular leadership reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
