(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Specialist Fourth Class Robert E. Barnes (ASN: RA-16915925), United States Army, was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in connection with military operations against the enemy while serving as a Medical Aidman for Weapons Platoon, Company C, 4th Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam on 14 February 1968. Specialist Barnes crawled across an open rice paddy under intense fire to aid four wounded men and then assisted in taking them to an extraction site. While he and the wounded men were waiting for a helicopter, they were attacked. Specialist Barnes killed two of the Viet Cong and destroyed a bunker. He then aided ten other persons before helping load the injured aboard a helicopter.
