Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 86 (March 3, 1953)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Corporal] McCoy Barmer (ASN: US-53079116), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 7 December 1952, a squad of Company A, 1st Battalion, of which Sergeant Barmer was squad leader, was assigned the mission of assaulting Checkpoint B on “Jackson Heights”, in the vicinity of Hak Tong-Ni, Korea. Upon reaching the objective, the squad was subjected to intense hostile fire, seriously wounding the automatic rifleman. Sergeant Barmer exposed himself to this fire as he aided in the evacuation of the casualty. The severity of the hostile attack caused the friendly elements to withdraw to more tenable positions. Sergeant Barmer again exposed himself as he dashed to the top of Checkpoint B to observe enemy action on Checkpoint C, until his position became untenable. When the squad was ordered off the hill, Sergeant Barmer left the area only after his men had returned to friendly lines. Sergeant Barmer’s outstanding gallantry, initiative and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
