The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Dan T. Barker, United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 8th Field Artillery Battalion, 25th Infantry Division in Korea, on 1 November 1951. Captain Barker’s unit was attacking a well-fortified hostile force which had isolated friendly elements near Unjungha, Korea. Despite devastating enemy fire, Captain Barker repeatedly exposed himself to gain vantage points from which he could direct the most effective artillery bombardment of the enemy. Even after the unit had withdrawn, he refused to leave the impact area until he was sure that all of his men had reached the base of operations. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Barker, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
