The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Master Sergeant Jay T. Bare (ASN: RA-13254096), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 14 February 1951, near Choili, Korea, Sergeant Bare’s company was attacking a series of strongly defended enemy emplacements when his platoon was suddenly subjected to extremely intense enemy fire, forcing it to take cover. Upon reaching a position of comparative safety, Sergeant Bare was informed that one of his men had been seriously wounded and was unable to move. Displaying complete disregard for his personal safety and despite the devastating fire blanketing the area, Sergeant Bare went to where the stricken soldier lay and carried him to safety. Sergeant Bare’s gallant and courageous action reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
