The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) George A. Barber (ASN: 0-724672), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a B-25 Mitchell Bomber of the 77th Bombardment Squadron, 28th Bombardment Group (Composite), ELEVENTH Air Force, in aerial operations in the Territory of Alaska, on 30 December 1942. As pilot of a formation of Medium Bombers in an attack against Japanese shipping in Kiska Harbor, Lieutenant Barber encountered extremely heavy antiaircraft fire as well as expected fighter opposition. Regardless of the severity of the enemy fire and despite the fact that his plane was hit repeatedly, Lieutenant Barber held his course until completion of his scheduled mission. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Barber, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
