101st Airborne Division (Airmobile), General Orders No. 6438 (June 7, 1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Nickie Paine Jones (ASN: 53761101), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam on 3 May 1970. Specialist Jones distinguished himself while serving as driver for the Assistant Division Engineer in Headquarters and Headquarters Company , 326th Engineer Battalion (Airmobile). Immediately following an enemy rocket attack on Camp Eagle, Republic of Vietnam, he drove the Assistant Division Commander to the major impact area and encountered two burning armed helicopters. The helicopter exploded and started fires in the maintenance hangars and several ammunition storage areas, spreading debris and live ammunition in the vicinity. An ammunition storage area exploded and started a fire in an area containing over a thousand rockets. Despite the danger of the rockets exploding and the danger of recurring explosions from the other burning storage area, Specialist Jones positioned his vehicle to illuminate the road with his headlights. The light enabled the road to be cleared of live rounds, rockets, and other debris, so the fire trucks could get through. While the fire trucks extinguished the fire in the rocket storage area, Specialist Jones provided illumination with his vehicle for the removal of additional live rounds and rockets from theiraround the maintenance hangar and facilitated the extinguishing of all fires. Specialist Jones’ personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
